Join Helmut and Dena Kuhn for a journey to Naoshima, Japan—an extraordinary place where contemporary art, architecture, nature, and island life have been brought together in ways found almost nowhere else.

Located in Japan’s Seto Inland Sea, the Benesse Art Site Naoshima has transformed a group of small islands into one of the world’s most remarkable destinations for contemporary art.

Through photographs, video, and conversation from their visit, Helmut and Dena will explore the exquisite presentation of art throughout the Benesse sites—from Tadao Ando’s remarkable museum architecture and the underground galleries of Chichu Art Museum to intimate Art House Projects, outdoor installations, and artworks embedded directly into the island landscape.

Rather than simply placing art inside museums, Naoshima creates encounters between art, architecture, light, landscape, and everyday life.

Episode TWO of Art Museum Journeys, presented on the Cambria Center for the Arts Theatre’s large cinema screen, offers a personal look at what it is like to experience these remarkable places and the ideas that have made Naoshima an international destination for contemporary art.

Will explain my history with art and my process for this show: Birds Eye View

Tigg has created art throughout her life in one form or another, including interior design and architectural drafting. She received a degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in Graphic Communications. Eventually, she found her way to painting. She works with both oils and watercolors, in her studio and outdoors. She is inspired by the natural beauty of the sea, the trees, and the charming communities tucked along the coastline.
